Explore Huerfano County and beyond

Huerfano Butte

Located about 9 miles from Walsenburg, the Huerfano Butte serves as a landmark for those coming into Walsenburg from the north. The seemingly peculiar volcanic plug stands about 180 feet above the land’s surface. Despite the “butte” classification, the prominence seems to resemble a miniature mountain peak, especially with the juxtaposition of the surrounding flat land

Highway of Legends

As one of Colorado’s prized Scenic Highways, the Highway of Legends takes passengers between Walsenburg and Trinidad with an alternate route to or from the town of Aguilar. The trip takes about 2 hours and is 82 miles long. On the adventure, travelers can enjoy views of volcanic formations known as the Great Dikes of Spanish Peaks Country. The highest point in the endevor is nearly 10,000 feet above sea level at the Cucharas Pass

Spanish Peaks

Cartographers label this range the Spanish Peaks, but the native Ute tribes named them the Haujatolla or “Breasts of the Earth” centuries ago. Fitingly, the marvel seems to feed life into the environment she inhabits. Scientist estimate the age of The Spanish Peaks at about 25 million years and are a result of immense pressure caused by the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates. Hiking, fishing, camping, and a plethora of other outdoor activities can be found throughout Spanish Peaks Country!

Lathrop State Park
